چکیده

Abstract Primary carnitine deficiency (PCD) can be lethal. Carnitine is essential for the transfer of long‐chain fatty acids across inner mitochondrial membrane β‐oxidation. The reported prevalence PCD in Faroe Islands 1:300 highest world. Faroese patient cohort has been closely monitored and we now report results from a 10‐year follow‐up study 139 patients. Four patients have died natural causes since diagnosis. There were no signs cardiac complications related to PCD. 70.5% an effect L‐carnitine treatment. 33.7% current symptoms with fatigue low stamina being most common. 65.1% had experienced side effects during Most common fish odor, abdominal pain, diarrhea. overall mean dosage was 66.3 mg/kg/day. Free p‐carnitine similar between male female on L‐carnitine—18.6 18.8 μmol/L, respectively. supplementation seems safe effective treatment when suffering are alive doing well more than 10 years after

Neonatal Screening for Primary Carnitine Deficiency: Lessons Learned from the Faroe Islands

Primary carnitine deficiency is caused by the defective OCTN2 carnitine transporter encoded by the SLC22A5 gene. A lack of carnitine impairs fatty acid oxidation resulting in hypoketotic hypoglycemia, hepatic encephalopathy, skeletal and cardiac myopathy, and arrhythmia. This condition can be detected by finding low levels of free carnitine (C0) in neonatal screening. Mothers with primary carni...

Residual OCTN2 transporter activity, carnitine levels and symptoms correlate in patients with primary carnitine deficiency

BACKGROUND The prevalence of primary carnitine deficiency (PCD) in the Faroe Islands is the highest reported in the world (1:300). Serious symptoms related to PCD, e.g. sudden death, have previously only been associated to the c.95A > G/c.95A > G genotype in the Faroe Islands. We report and characterize novel mutations associated with PCD in the Faroese population and report and compare free ca...

Systemic primary carnitine deficiency with hypoglycemic encephalopathy

Acute hypoglycemia in children is not an uncommon disease that can be encountered in the Emergency Department. Most cases of childhood hypoglycemia are caused by ketotic hypoglycemia due to missed meals. Often, hypoketotic hypoglycemia can also occur, which suggests hyperinsulinemia or a defect in fatty acid oxidation. Carnitine is essential for long chain fatty acids transfer into mitochondria...
